PRODUCTION LOG- ScoopIt!

SCOOP IT!

Today in our media lesson we looked at how we go on to scoop it and create an account so that we could scoop some important news reports or web pages or anything that related to the thriller codes and conventions which are relevant to what our film opening is about, to get some inspiration. This will be very useful, as I scopped some stories and news reports about kidnapping and girls being kidnapped and what happened, I did this so I could find out more about what happens which would help in our film opening.

this is a link to my scoop it where I scooped some interesting and useful stories to help me feel inspired and also to find out more information for my film opening.

PROJECT LOG- PLANNING

Today in lesson we planned what we were finally going to do for our film opening, we didn’t change anything we just added some more information to make the story have more tension. The idea that was added was that the girl’s father has a very high class job as a surgeon and he unfortunately failed his surgery on one of his patients, who was a young female. The patient that died was the daughter of the man who hurt the girl, which is the reason that he kidnapped her, revenge. I think it’s a very clever idea that in her flashback the man who has taken her calls her name ‘laura’ at the same time that her father does, making her wake up from her flashback.

MY GROUP- PLANNING

Planning: the brief

I am working in a group of 3, including myself and the other members in my group are Nicole shakhnazarova and Christina davies.  We have chosen brief 7 (video). The opening sequence from a new film including the title in any genre or mix of genres such as a comedy or a thriller. Together with a story board. Maximum length = 3 minutes.

SPOOKS

Spooks:

-          Genre: spy/crime

-          In London

-          Mi5

-          I watched the opening of a tv drama, at first there was the build up and then their was the opening which is repeated every week. We see someone who is clearly the leader of mi5. There was a lot of cross cutting between 2 people during a phone call, the audience are invited to find out what is sugar horse, which brings suspense. The opening titles all move very fast, lots of quick cuts and a quick screen showing a busy world.

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW

The day after tomorrow:

-          Long tracking shot

-          Sense of excitement and adventure

-          Journey to a remote location

This film starts with a very long tracking shot, which is shown over the land of the Antarctic which suggests a sense of excitement, and also a sense of adventure. The shot is long as the direction pictures them traveling on a plane to this very hostile and magnificent location. The CGI is really realistic which makes us feel as if it’s real and that we are actually there, the colours in the opening scene are all white and light and dark blues which gives us a sense of majesty. All of the titles come up at the beginning with in the first 3 minutes of the film. Overall the opening creates a feel of magnificence, and all of the building up creates tension but also a sense of brilliance but as well, suspense.  The shift between the opening tracking shot and the live action is marked by the text.

THURSDAY 18TH- PRODUCTION LOG- PLANNING

Today in class we looked at a variety of different types of film openings to expand our mind to new ideas and so we could gather inspiration from them and use some of these ideas in our own film openings.  The two film openings we viewed where two different genres, this was good because it meant that we could see different types of openings and see which one inspired us, which will help us decide what type of film opening we want to create. The first opening we looked at was the English patient, which opened with a very close up shot of someone painting, the close up was focused on the hand. They appeared to be painting a mountain or something similar, after this they then had a cross dissolve to an aerial shot, which is now in Egypt. This shows what the person was painting and its very effective the way that they showed her painting before which created enigma. The other one we looked at was made in Dagenham, which opened with an estabiishing shot which makes the audience want to find out more, then it went straight into women working.

THURSDAY 18TH- PRODUCTION LOG- PLANNING

This is a picture of the plan we made in lesson, I'm working in a group of 3, myself Nicole Shakhnazarova and Christina Davies. We have chosen brief 7 which is a video, the opening sequence from a new film including the title and any genre or mix of genres such as comedy or thriller. Together with a story board. Maximum length= 3 minutes.

We came up with 8 initial plan ideas,  we then wrote them down on paper and made it into a type of diagram, each section showing a new idea.
1-    Starts of with a girl in the bath (inspired by rihanna’s stay video) and she has been taken away/ hurt/ kidnapped but she has escaped and found her way ack home, but is still damaged physically and emotionally.
2-    She doesn’t want anyone to realise what has happened to her and doest want people to see the bruises and marks she has on her body, she wants to forget it happened
3-    She starts humming to herself trying to forget about everything
4-    She is reminded of the pain she went through by flashbacks of when she was taken, and in the flashback you see the man taking her and tying her up with a rope.
5-     She gets into the bath to wash away the blood in hope that it will calm her down also
6-     She see’s the damage on her wrists from the rope burn from when the man had tied her up which makes the flash backs clearer and more frequent.
7-    She gets out of the bath and looks in the mirror and uses some of her make up (foundation, concealer, cover up) to cover up her bruises and scars as she doesn’t want her family, or anyone to know or realise what has happened.
8-     Lastly, she throws away the clothes she was wearing when she got taken as they are covered in blood and remind her of what happened. Sharply after the title sequence comes up.

MADE IN DAGENHAM AND THE ENGLISH PATIENT

The other one we looked at was made in Dagenham, which opened with an establishing shot which makes the audience want to find out more, then it went straight into women working. I think this will really help me with my film opening as there where a lot of close up shots which where very effective which made me think about the type of close up shots I want to do and also inspired me, as they where both very creative openings.

ARCHETYPE

An archetypal character, is a character who appears over and over in legends far and wide.
The definition of an archetype: An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned. Archetypes are very widespread throughout much or the world's mythology, and it is thought that many of them are thousands of years old. The world 'achetype' itself is from the latin term achetypum which is a form of the greek achetupon meaning 'first moulded'  There are a lot of achetypes in fairy tales, and some of them are very recognizable, such as the king and queen and a handsome prince, the witch or monster, the good fairy, a fool or jester, a mother figure, or an evil step mother ect. For example, in snow white and the huntsman there is the figure of the prince in the story. This character is the 'hero' of the tale. It is he who rescues Snow White and ultimately marries her, bringing the tale to a close and sealing the fate of the evil queen.

SHERLOCK HOLMES

The genre of this film is historical action and adventure, it is action because Sherlock Holmes and Watson are seen fighting villains, it is also historical as it is set in Victorian England we can tell this from the props and costumes, for example the old lateen and horses and carriages, bowler hats and victorian dresses. In the opening scene you can see St.Pauls cathedral which anchors the location as London. The buildings are all very old, its all period buildings. There is definatley a sense of adventure created by the music which is a very fast pace which slowly builds up to get louder and quicker.  The lighting is very murky which is a restricted pallet of sepia gas light and black and white.

In the opening scene we see the cobbled ground and the sounds of the horses which creates some suspense and tension as you dont know where they are going. We are immersed in the action which is partly what creates the adventure as the camera is not help using a tripod, it is hand held which makes it look bumpy and makes you feel as if you are on the horse carriage and going with him. The tracking shot conveys speed and motion in the race to save a young woman and prevent her murder. There are some close up shots that are used to make sure the audience can see who the key characters are such as Sherlock, there is a very close up shot of him underground hiding behind a wall. But mostly in the part of the film we watched it was a tracking shot, a long journey on a horse and carriage.  Showing all that was around us, as if we where there. We experience dark alley ways hidden corners and very dark buildings and streets. This type of camera work is very jurky and bumpy which gives a sense of jeopardy

Theres a lot of editing in the sequence that we watched, a very good piece of editing was the slow motion used, it suggests that time is slowing down. I think there are some very unique and unusual parts of the editing which makes us able to share Holmes' thoughts and help us understand the story more.

ROBIN HOOD

You can tell that Robin Hood is an action and adventure film as shortly after the film begins there is already some fighting, they are using weapons such as crossbows arrows and swords which makes us able to tell that it is a very medieval film as these aren't the type of weapons we would use in a fighting scene today. Robin Hood is the typical hero and in the first few minutes of the film we are shown him, he is played by Russel Crowe. You can tell he is the hero as the is fighting for good and fighting for his country and he also rescues one of his friends seen hanging from a gate. You can tell that he is the type of man that is willing to risk his life for innocent people and is willing to fight for good. There are a lot of hero shots of Robin hood to help us identify that he is a hero, such as a low angle shot where there is a lot of line shining behind him which makes him seem very good and almost god like. The genre of this film would be historical as it is set in very medival times as you can tell by the weapons.

MISSION IMPOSSILBE

During our lesson today we watched the film mission impossible.
Genre: Crime Fiction, Spy, Comedy, Action.
Characters  Tom Cruise who plays Ethan Hunt, the first time that we meet with him we get a very heroic shot/ close up. This may be suggesting that he is the main person in the film and also the hero and will feature a lot during the film. I think he plays the typical hero in this film he has very nice fancy clothes looks like a cool hero, and as this film is based on comedy as well as spy, they make him a bit of a womenizer to make things funny.  Sounds: The theme song is a very intense beat which makes it obvious that is a spy film, it is a  rememberable and catchy theme tune which makes people always think of the film when they hear that song. When the film begins there's percussion instruments which I think suggests that Tom Cruise is a very important, strong character in the film.

AUSTIN POWERS

In our media lesson we watched a spoof of Austin powers starring Tom Cruise, during the lesson we watched the first few minutes which showed Austin who was actually Tom Cruise flying into the scene and killing the bad guy and obviously ends up getting the girl, The charecters in ths film are extremely stereotypical, there the stereotypical villain and the hero Austin powers who wins the girl, and obviously being the hero he kills the evil villain. The heroin (Gwyneth paltro) plays a very confident women whos a single mother but very confident, which is ironic because most women play the hamsel in distress. There is a lot of weapons used as soon as it starts which suggests that as it continues there will be more fighting, theres a lot of movement throughout and especially when he comes down in a parechute and jumps into a moving car which brings a lot of suspense.

GLADIATOR

From watching the film Gladiator, I think that the opening scene is very important. I think its important because of the costumes that different people wear, he wears a cape made out of animal furr, whereas the other soldiers don't wear that, therefore it is showing that he is more of a heroic figure.  You can also tell this by the way that he speaks, he speaks like he is the boss of them which suggests that he is there leader, he walks past them in a particular way which makes him seem bigger than him. Costumes are vital, they are dressed in a typical ancient roman 'outfit' . All costumes are extreamlley important in mise en sen.  The special effects where quite good, the colour of the light was amazing and was misty and dark, the sound is also very good as there is a sound of sword fighting and galloping horses which make the audience feel like they are there possibly watching the fights and can feel the thrill.  However, i noticed that at the beginning of this film there are no binary opposites, therefore meaning that there might be some later on in the film.

SKYFALL

SKYFALL
DESCRIBING THE GENRE

Some of the main genres in the film Skyfall are:
Thriller
Romance
Action
Adventure
Crime Fiction

The film  has a lot of different emotions, and every scene is different. Its difficult to say what the main genre of the film is as there are so many different themes throughout each scene in the film. I think that Thriller is definitely a main and common theme/genre throughout the film Skyfall, because as soon as the film starts it goes straight into the action, and not long after Bond gets shot. This also related to Action and Adventure and Crime Fiction. James Bonds mission is to protect everyone from villains therefore he has to commit crimes along the way to get rid of the bad people.I also think that Romance is a genre as James Bond is a very herioc figure, so women are bound to fall in love with someone who is like that. Bond is well known for having a 'bond girl' with him. However Bond isn't that in love with her however we could still classify this as romance. I think that it is good that they also put Romance in a crime fiction action film as it makes the calm down about the Violence, shooting, explosions and tension in the film and makes people feel as if the film is more realistic and romance is something that happens in real life situations. There is a lot of action in sky fall and a lot of shooting and a lot of tension, but Bond is 'invisible' and we know that he can get past anything but the action and adventure makes us feel unsure and excited about what will happen next.

The second hobbit trailer

At the beginning of the trailer you get the image that is a peaceful place because of all of trees showing nature, but then it changes into a place where the trees don’t look so fresh they look dead and the in the background you can see the remains of a castle, you know that the land has not been touched s there is small cottage in the back with flat grassy land. In the house you notice that the ceiling is low down showing the people in the house are small.  Gandalf is wearing what you would expect a wizard to wear eg. A clock and pointy hat. There is dramatic music to open the trailer, it then changes after the first titles and becomes less exciting and dramatic which shows a change in the environment aswell, There is a BEV to show how much forest there is, a ECU of Gandalf, a close up shot of the lead dwarf with all the other ones behind him, then there are full screen shots of the dwards so people can see them individually. There is camera zooming into a map, another ECU, to Gollum to show how he looks. There is also a low angle shot to show where the dwarfs are to make them look bigger than they are. There is a mid shot with the guy on the opposite side of the mirror. Theres a lot of different colour tones, there are warm colours which then turn cold when it changes scenes, there are brighter colours in the inside of Bilbo’s home to show that is it safe for him to be there. there are voice overs also.
