From watching the film Gladiator, I think that the opening scene is very important. I think its important because of the costumes that different people wear, he wears a cape made out of animal furr, whereas the other soldiers don't wear that, therefore it is showing that he is more of a heroic figure. You can also tell this by the way that he speaks, he speaks like he is the boss of them which suggests that he is there leader, he walks past them in a particular way which makes him seem bigger than him. Costumes are vital, they are dressed in a typical ancient roman 'outfit' . All costumes are extreamlley important in mise en sen. The special effects where quite good, the colour of the light was amazing and was misty and dark, the sound is also very good as there is a sound of sword fighting and galloping horses which make the audience feel like they are there possibly watching the fights and can feel the thrill. However, i noticed that at the beginning of this film there are no binary opposites, therefore meaning that there might be some later on in the film.
Grade C You are on the right lines but too general. Refer to Maximus by name; answer the questions set in the class blog post as captions under the pictures. The binary opposites refer to the civilized Romans versus the brutish, bestial enemy. How is the enemy represented? How is sound used?
